Artillery Tank

OVERVIEW

The artillery tank is named in the official WARDOGS description as one of the ways a player can choose to spend a match: if you are feeling destructive, you could man an artillery tank and rain down destruction on the enemy. The same passage names heavily armoured tanks separately, in a sentence about tearing through towns. Both appear on the Steam store page and the Team17 game page, read at the source on 4 September 2026. The word that matters most in the first sentence is man, because it implies a vehicle that is occupied and operated rather than driven past, and because it sits in a list whose point is that no one is assigned to anything.

HISTORY

Indirect fire is an unusual thing to hand to individual players in a shooter, and it makes sense here for a structural reason the same sources establish. WARDOGS scores by presence: the team with the most players inside a control zone of two kilometres by two earns the points, and the first to one hundred wins. A weapon that can make a position unpleasant without being in it is therefore aimed at the one thing that actually decides matches. The publisher pairs the vehicle with the destruction layer in the same passage — apartment blocks coming down, towns torn through — and both the Steam page and the Team17 page describe the battlefield as destructible. What none of them publishes, as of 4 September 2026, is range, reload, crew size, cost, or whether the gun can be fired without seeing the target.

WHAT IT CHANGES IN PRACTICE

Read the two tank mentions as two different jobs, because the description does. One is written about pushing through built-up ground under armour; the other is written about hitting somewhere you are not. Only the second is called an artillery tank. In a game where the objective is a fixed square that everyone must stand in, the second job has an obvious use and an obvious limit: shells do not hold ground, and points come from bodies. The honest summary is that this is a vehicle for making a place expensive rather than for taking it, and that everything past that sentence — how accurate, how far, how long between shots — is unpublished. We will write those numbers when they can be read from the game rather than guessed, which becomes possible on 10 September 2026.

WHAT PLAYERS GET WRONG

The buying mistake is the one the cash economy makes costly: spending big on the most spectacular thing on the list. Money carries from match to match, so an expensive vehicle bought for a bad position is a debt carried into the next round, and the official description is explicit that spending big is a bet with the potential to turn a battle or to cost you. The second mistake is thinking artillery answers a defended zone. It does not, on the published rules: it can punish a position, but the team with more players inside still scores. The third is assuming what is not written — that both tank mentions describe one vehicle. They may; the description names them differently and we are not going to merge them on its behalf. Our entries on destruction and on the control zone carry what is established about the ground this vehicle is used on.

WHAT CHANGES ON 10 SEP

Early Access makes the game itself citable. We will re-check this entry against the game, confirm or correct what it says, and update the checked date. If anything here turns out to be wrong, this page will say so — and say when we learned it.
