OVERVIEW

WARDOGS puts up to one hundred players on the field split across three teams rather than the usual two. Both the Steam store page and Team17’s official game page state this, and it is the structural choice that separates WARDOGS from the two-sided shooters it gets compared to. Three sides means the fight over the Control Zone is rarely a straight line: while one team pushes, a third is usually arriving from somewhere else, and the balance of the round keeps tipping.

HISTORY

Three-way conflict is rare in large-scale shooters because it is hard to keep fair, and most of the genre has stayed with two sides. The official Steam description frames the split as central to the game rather than a mode variant, and Team17’s page repeats it. Corrected on 4 September 2026, and the correction matters more than the paragraph. Until today this page carried the opposite claim — that the three sides had never been identified by the publisher — and it declined to repeat the faction names circulating on fan sites. That was wrong. BULKHEAD published all three on the game’s own store feed on 18 February 2026, in a question-and-answer post, each with a colour and an identity: LONESTAR, described as the heavy-hitters of the Western paramilitary world; VALKYRA, described as aiming to return the Soviet People’s Republic to greatness; and MANTICORE, described as the Kingdom of Persia’s shadow army out of Tehran. We missed it because we were watching the store page and not the announcement feed attached to it — a channel we only put under watch on 3 September 2026. The colours match what the official screenshots show. What remains genuinely unpublished, as of 4 September 2026, is whether the three sides differ in anything mechanical: no official source states that equipment, vehicles or abilities vary between them.

WHAT IT CHANGES IN PRACTICE

The practical consequence of a third side is that no position is ever safe from one direction only. Team17 states that points come from presence in the zone, which means a team can profit from letting two opponents grind each other down before committing. Whether that patience actually pays, and how the game prevents two teams from informally allying against a leader, is not something any public source addresses as of 16 August 2026. It is one of the first things we will test once the game can be played.

WHAT PLAYERS GET WRONG

Players arriving from two-sided shooters read the map wrong: they assume that anything not friendly is coming from the same place. With three teams contesting one zone, the flank you never watch is the one that ends your life. The official sources confirm the three-team split and the hundred-player count but say nothing about team sizes or balancing, as of 16 August 2026. Our Control Zone page covers how points actually accrue, which is what decides whether patience or pressure is the better answer.

WHAT CHANGES ON 10 SEP

Early Access makes the game itself citable. We will re-check this entry against the game, confirm or correct what it says, and update the checked date. If anything here turns out to be wrong, this page will say so — and say when we learned it.
