No Classes
OVERVIEW
WARDOGS appears to have no classes at all. According to PC Gamer, writing on 11 August 2026 after playing a test build, there are no formal roles — only tools that anyone can buy, such as rocket launchers, defibrillators, hammers and crowbars. If that holds at launch, your role in a match is decided by what you spent your money on that life, not by a slot you picked in a menu. It is one of the least understood things about the game, and several sites describe roles that this account says do not exist.
HISTORY
The genre WARDOGS is compared to leans heavily on classes: they guarantee that a squad has a medic, an engineer and someone who can kill a tank. PC Gamer, on 11 August 2026, described the trade-off directly — without fixed roles the game is less organised, but nobody is locked out of a job because someone else claimed it first. Whether BULKHEAD intends to keep this open structure through Early Access is not addressed in any official source we could find as of 16 August 2026.
WHAT IT CHANGES IN PRACTICE
The practical consequence is that squad composition becomes a spending decision made fresh at every death. PC Gamer reported on 11 August 2026 that this had a cost in its matches: it was hard to find anyone carrying the specific tool a situation needed, because carrying it was nobody’s job. The counterpart is flexibility — the same account notes never being boxed into a role. What none of this tells us is what the tools actually cost, which is the number that would decide how often people carry them.
WHAT PLAYERS GET WRONG
The publisher’s own phrasing settles this more firmly than the reporting did, and we added it on 4 September 2026 after reading a question-and-answer post dated 18 February 2026 on the game’s store feed. Under the heading of roles, it states that roles are totally player-defined, that a player buys specialist items to build a loadout, and that experience is earned across six progression tracks — naming Medic and Pilot as examples. So the roles exist as words people use and as tracks you advance; what does not exist is a slot you pick before a match that decides what you may carry. The error here is one of expectation, and it is being repeated across the web: people plan around classes that this reporting says are not in the game. If you arrive looking for a medic slot, you will not find one — you buy a defibrillator, or nobody in your group has one. We mark this as reported rather than confirmed because it rests on a single outlet playing a pre-release build. Our cash economy page covers the spending decision that replaces the class menu.
Early Access makes the game itself citable. We will re-check this entry against the game, confirm or correct what it says, and update the checked date. If anything here turns out to be wrong, this page will say so — and say when we learned it.
