OVERVIEW

Forward operating bases are the part of WARDOGS that turns a firefight into a campaign. The Steam page and Team17’s official page both state that players build fortifications and forward bases on a destructible battlefield, alongside vehicles and logistics. A FOB is what lets a team hold ground near the Control Zone instead of running back across a very large map after every death, which is why building one is a combat action even though it involves no shooting.

HISTORY

Player-built bases come from the milsim end of the genre, where the logistics chain is half the game. PC Gamer, reporting on 11 August 2026 after playing a test build, described the layer as familiar to that tradition: building FOBs, constructing defences, moving supplies and holding strategic points. Team17 presents the same systems as core to its sandbox. As of 16 August 2026, no official source has published what a FOB costs, what it can be built from, or how many a team may hold at once.

WHAT IT CHANGES IN PRACTICE

The interesting detail is that FOBs are meant to be broken as well as built. PC Gamer, on 11 August 2026, reported buying a crowbar specifically to break into enemy forward bases, which tells you attacking a base is its own job with its own tool. Team17 also states the battlefield is destructible, so a FOB is not permanent cover. What no public source explains, as of 16 August 2026, is how much punishment a built structure absorbs — and that is exactly the sort of value that only the game files can settle.

WHAT PLAYERS GET WRONG

The error is building where it feels safe rather than where it saves travel time. A base far from the Control Zone protects the people who least need protecting. PC Gamer noted on 11 August 2026 that its matches saw players holding towers and defending bases rather than pushing the objective, which is a comfortable habit that does not win rounds where points come from presence. Our Control Zone page sets out how scoring actually works, and it is the page to read before deciding where to build.
